OS X Tiger: Dashboard

Dashboard is a wonderful feature of OS X that allows users to easily organize their desktop, and their lives, with the press of a button.

A new feature that was introduced by Apple with OSX Tiger was Dashboard. With a press of a button dashboard allows you to instantly display your itunes playlist, the weather in your city, and allows you to check how your stocks are doing. Another press of the button, and you're back to a blank desktop. One of the neatest features of dashboard is that it is fully customizable to the user. Unlike your toolbar that is pre-set with information, your dashboard is filled with different widgets that you select. Here are a few of the different widget options you have that come pre-installed in OS X Tiger :

Dictionary/ Thesaurus

The dictionary widget is great for writers and students. You can easily pull up the widget without having to close a document you are working on. The Thesaurus can make it easy to find different ways of saying things.

Stickies

The sticky feature is something I used the heck out of in OS 9. It allows you to essentially make digital post-it notes and lay them out in dashboard. Remind yourself to make a phone call, or make a grocery list right on your desktop.

Weather

Want to know if your golf trip is going to be rained out this weekend? The weather widget can be great to let you know what the weather is outside right now, and what you can expect for the next week.

Phone Book

Who needs a bulky phone book? The phone book widget can allow you to search through not just your hometown phonebook, but every public phone number in the United States, pretty nifty.

Address Book

Keep your own personal contacts available with the press of a button. This widget can make it easy to pull up your friends and clients addresses and phone numbers in an instant.

Calendar

Keep track of all your important meetings and events in the calendar widget.
