The debate continues. Is OS X or Windows a more secure operating system? Take a look at the rebuttle to the PC article "Windows Always Rules".
After reading Abhinav's response "Windows Always Rules" to my "Why Switch To Mac" article, my first response was to say "If everyone else jumped off a bridge would you?" because thats just what it is.
If you jump off a bridge the fall may be kind of fun, but in the end you're going to crash and burn. The same goes for Windows, while operating system may be easy (like falling), in the end you'll realize it may have not been the best idea, and you're going to crash.
In his article he attempted to fight for the Windows operating system, I feel like that article only strengthens my point that Mac's are superior computer system. I think my original article didn't do Macs enough justice so in my next series of articles I will attempt to address each of Abhinav's points and go a littler more in depth about Mac and what it has to offer. Todays topic: Security.
Abhinav's reasoning for why Apple are thought to be so secure is because virus writers would rather target the 90% of the population that have PCs rather than the 10% that are using Macs. If you were a virus writer, and Macs were "easy" to hack into, then why not write one for both?
I've had my G4 for 5 years now. I have NEVER had a virus of any type on the system. I don't have any kind of virus protection software on my computer whatsoever, and the computer has been connected to the internet literally 24/7 for the last 5 years.
Even Abhinav says in his article Macs "could be" as vulnerable as Windows, not ARE as vulnerable as windows
I would like to point out to the reader that the "article" Abhinav used as a source for his argument is a blog entry written by Abhinav himself on another site. If the only article he can find to support himself is an article that HE WROTE himself, then I think he is only reinforcing my point.
If that wasn't enough he even says in that article "Some of the things that attracted me to a Mac is its looks, high memory capability and the stability in terms of security."
The only thing in the article against Macs says that Macs "could soon be as vulnerable as Windows machines" not that they are already. Personally I think that "could soon" has a lot to do with the new ability to put Windows on them. OS X remains a secure operating system. Windows on the other hand is a security nightmare. The only way you're going to have security problems on your Mac is if you feel like you have to put a crappy OS (Windows) on it.
Businessweek posted an article last week where they take a look at the Apple security debate. I think that the article presents both sides pretty effectively, and is a MUCH better source than anotehr article written by Abhinav. Abhinav has done a good job himself however of making it obvious that Mac's are a more secure system.
