Know Your G3's

G3 Apple Laptops can all look pretty similar. But are they?

Before there were shiny G4 titanium PowerBooks, and sleek white G4 PowerBooks, there were the G3's. You know you've seen them, not only in coffee houses but also on the set of television shows like "Sex in the City" and "Felicity". The laptops were black in color with a white glowing apple on the back. Did you know that there were actually several different models of the G3 PowerBooks?

The G3's were replaced with G3 series II, which are also, know as Wall Street and PDQ in September 1998. May 10th 1999 Apple released the G3 Lombard. The Lombard itself only lasted until February of 2000, when the PowerBook Pismo replaced it.

I actually currently own a G3 Powerbook. I was able to purchase the whole system off eBay for less than $300, and have absolutely loved having the machine. It came with a removable wifi card, so I am able to get online on the go. It also had an expandable firewire card (not built in).

If you decide to purchase one of these computers (used is the only way to do it) it's important to make sure you know what version of the computer you are purchasing. The computers for the most part look identical in photographs; the difference is going to be what is in the inside.

The final powerbook pismo has built in firewire, which makes it capable of connecting a camcorder for video editing (depending on your hard drive space). You can also put two batteries in the computer giving you 10 hours of power.
